Please join us for a discussion with national musicians who performed with Sam Rivers’ Rivbea Orchestra, providing us insight on what it was like to know Sam Rivers as a musician and friend. Participants will include Joseph Daley (tuba) and Steve Coleman (saxophone), both of whom worked with Rivers in New York during the early days of Studio Rivbea and beyond; and Doug Mathews (bass & clarinet) and Craig Harris (trombone) who worked with Rivers during his years in Orlando. Kathryn Haines, who leads Pitt’s Center for American Music, will moderate the discussion and display materials from the archive.

Rivers was widely known in both traditional and avant-garde jazz circles. His extensive archive, which includes hundreds of scores and unreleased audio and video performances, was recently acquired by the University of Pittsburgh Library System.

Hillman Library is located at 3960 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15260. Free on-street parking is available after 6:00 p.m. on various streets surrounding the library. Paid parking is also available at Soldiers & Sailors Parking Garage (.2 miles from the library). Hillman is also accessible by public transportation. See the Pittsburgh Regional Transit website for planning your trip. 

The entrance to the library is located at the Forbes Avenue address, accessed by a ramp leading from street level to the First Floor plaza. Sidewalks around the library are closed as part of library renovation; follow signs to library entrance.
