Session 3 of the Library’s Fall R series focuses on data visualization using the ggplot2 package. ggplot2 offers a modular and flexible set of tools for visually exploring data as well as producing publication-ready plots. We will tour popular plot types such as histograms, bar charts, and scatter plots. Attending sessions 1🔗 and 2🔗 is strongly recommended. No previous experience with statistics is expected.

Topics discussed:

  • “Grammar of graphics” and “aesthetic mapping” concepts

  • Univariate plots (histograms and density plots)

  • Comparing distributions: box and violin plots

  • Scatter plots

  • Bar charts

  • Heat maps of two-way tables

  • Line graphs

  • Small multiples (faceting)

  • Labeling, theming, and annotation
