R is a free, open-source, software package and programming environment used primarily for processing, analyzing, and visualizing tabular data. It is also a general-purpose tool for many tasks throughout the research lifecycle. In this two-hour, hands-on workshop, we will orient ourselves to R and RStudio, install and attach useful community-developed packages, load and save tabular data, and work with the basic data structures found in R. No previous experience with R or statistics is expected. This is the first session of a four-week series. (Register for session 2 here.)

Topics discussed:

  • RStudio orientation

  • Arithmetic and calling functions interactively

  • Installing and attaching packages

  • Loading, examining, and saving tabular data

  • R data types and structures

  • Recognizing and working with missing data

  • Simple histograms and scatter plots
