GitHub is a site where anyone can post and share repositories of code or data to practice Open Science (aka Open Scholarship). It can even host a simple website for your project--all for free. Each repository on GitHub utilizes a powerful "version control" software called Git. Git can track changes in files over time, fork derivative versions of a project, and reconcile updates to project files made by different collaborators. In this one-hour introductory tour, we'll see what is possible with Git and GitHub, sketch how it all fits together, and have an introductory taste of using Git ourselves.
