Anna Grumbach, a PhD candidate in contemporary art history-photography at the Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne Université, will recontextualize Linda Benedict-Jones’s Self-Portraits series of photographs, created between 1975 and 1977, within the French photographic scene of the 1970s. These photographs, recently donated to the University of Pittsburgh Library System, illustrate the vibrant transformation taking place in photography at the time and, coinciding with the rise of feminist movements, reveal that a few female photographers found their way in a male-dominated space, developing unique visual strategies to assert and explore their identities.
Anna Grumbach is a PhD candidate in contemporary art history - photography at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She is a member of ARIP (photographic image research association) and the HICSA laboratory. With Pr. Michel Poivert, she co-curated the exhibition "Metamorphoses. Photography in France. 1968-1989" at the Pavillon Populaire in Montpellier (2022) and is currently presenting, as the scientific curator, the exhibition "L'(OEIL) OBJECTIF" at the Musée Cantini in Marseille. This exhibit is part of the Rencontres d'Arles program. She’s one of the Center for Creative Photography’s 2024-2025 fellowship recipients.
