Holders of data have long recognized a duty to human privacy and have therefore removed “personally identifiable information” (PII) prior to publishing a dataset or sharing it with another party. However, research and real-life situations have shown that what will be “identifiable” is difficult to predict. The implications may be far reaching in both the contexts of academic research data and of society generally. This presentation gives an overview of issues around data privacy and the proposed remedy of differential privacy. Time will be available for Q&A.
