The ULS is excited to partner with University of Pittsburgh Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR) for Using the Southwestern PA Community Profiles, a Hands-on GIS Day Event, focusing on getting started with GIS using UCSUR’s new Southwestern Pennsylvania Community Profiles website.  The SWPA Community Profiles site is an interactive website that provides easy access to community data.  It is a new way to collect, analyze, and understand information across a range of domains to look at neighborhoods and communities in a comprehensive data fashion.

This workshop has three parts: the first half hour (optional) will focus on configuring your own GIS environment, using either ArcGIS or the open source QGIS application. The second half hour will introduce participants to the SWPA Community Profiles site, including how to download data and apply it to your new GIS environment. In the last hour, we will workshop different scenarios.

This is a hands-on workshop - please bring your own laptop if possible. If you are new to GIS, we recommend attending the Introduction to Spatial Analysis workshop that we will be offering on November 13.
